Book Review: Heartstopper Vol 1-3 by Alice Oseman

What’s the Story: (from Goodreads)

Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more…?

Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys. The past year hasn’t been too great, but at least he’s not being bullied anymore. Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He’s heard a little about Charlie – the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months – but he’s never had the opportunity to talk to him.

They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner…

Review:

I had seen the covers of these graphic novels come up numerous times on my Amazon page. There was just something so adorable about the way the two teenage boys were drawn that drew me into their world. I was curious about what the story was between them. How did they fall in love?

I took the plunge and bought the first three volumes and I was not disappointed. I was FAR from disappointed. I fell in love with Charlie and Nick’s story. I in fact want MORE of their story. I loved how it took time for the two friends to fall for each other. That one had to go through some self-discovery and now they are taking on the high school world together.

I’m also a HUGE fan of the secondary characters in these graphic novels. I want to know all about their friend group. This is what I needed during quarantine. It was a good story with supportive and great characters. It wasn’t too deep, it wasn’t cliché. It was the goodness I needed.

If you are looking for something uplifting to get through this summer and even the rest of the year. You will be truly touched by these volumes. I cannot wait for more.
